The secret of the body is the self
Reflections from ancient Indian texts
By Ysé Tardan-MasquelierEnglish
The most ancient Indian tradition is based on a body of enigmatic writings called the Veda, which places the investigation of secrecy at the core of revelation. Because language conceals the essence of wisdom, a quest is necessary. Subsequent religious teachings interiorise the secret: the âtman, or self, dwells in the human heart. As the temple of the self, the body possesses eminent dignity; moreover, it is necessary as an existential vehicle towards the metaphysical knowledge which provides release. Such a philosophy of humanity is not at all obsolete if one believes, like Jung, that “the symbols of the self arise in the depths of the body”.
