Paradoxical ends of analysis

By Viviane Jullien-Palletier
English

The author’s goal is to develop a clinical viewpoint regarding the end of analysis in sub-jects presenting narcissistic wounds dating from early childhood. These may be the result of traumata experienced by earlier generations or avatars of life which have destabilized the precarious balance which is constructed in infancy up to the age of three. They leave the subject in a situation of great relational dependency, characterized by symptoms of adhesiveness, depression, or psychic confinement. In the phase when analysis is concluding, these problem-complexes from infancy reappear, causing a regression rather than the expected progression towards autonomy. Separation proves to be difficult if not impossible, which demands further analytical work on one or several phases of the end of analysis, or an interruption, in cases where the subject cannot be confronted with separation while maintaining the bond.
