When countertransference with a woman patient invariably sparked the same recurring images, the author was compelled to analyze them. He shows how his own “little African mythology,” based on his experience as a doctor in the Sahel, where the oral tradition and the question of meaning are of central importance, was a valuable guide to him in overcoming and opening up this patient’s Self-defense mechanisms.
