Job as a figure of well-tempered narcissism

The subjective position embodied by Job, as presented by Jung in Answer to Job, could be described as “well-tempered narcissism”. From a clinical viewpoint, this position would result from the conjunction of two psychic conditions which are seen as opposites: distress (Hilflosigkeit) and nostalgia (Sehnsucht) – and induced by a confrontation of the ego with the self in a negative valence.
