In both alchemy and Jungian practice, we see the anima/animus, our contrasexual partners, in an undifferentiated state, trouble our relations with the other and the world. Amorous passions, compulsions, emotional setbacks, and psychosomatic illnesses often serve as gateways on the quest for the wisdom which will interiorize the animus/anima according to a process whereby their energy is distilled until they become loving inner companions, and our relations with the people we love become more peaceful and fulfilling.
