Fear, Love, Power. A reading of Wagner’s Ring

Wagner’s Ring can be read as the story of a soul grappling with itself, haunted by the prospect of renunciation and driven by a desire for emancipation. How does Wotan find the strength to resist the charms of the sterile choice of Love or Power? What steps must he take before he can dare to undergo the metamorphosis necessary to embody a renewed sovereignty? Couldn’t the four-opera cycle be understood as the tale of an epic struggle to achieve the awe-inspiring encounter with the Other, the risk of an intense and uncertain relationship, the openness of two beings to the presence of love – an invitation to listen, with sensitivity and attention, to the voices of hope?
