The Romantic Androgynous Person or the Odyssey of Consciousness

Taking for granted Jung’s romantic ascendant, this article attempts to trace the nature and meaning of the founding myth of romantic philosophy: that of the androgynous figure. The romantic concepts of totality and original unity of opposites are analyzed in the work of Schelling while distinguishing between the concepts of “hermaphroditic” and “androgynous” as he applies them. Thus the odyssey of the consciousness according to Schelling can be outlined, from the loss of original androgynous unity to the eternal search for an identity.
