On the basis of clinical material gathered during therapy with a psychotic child between the ages of 3 and 10, the androgynous figure appears to be an archetypal organizer, in the transference, of the encounter with the sexual other. The author postulates that this figure may also operate in the organization of the primal mother-infant relationship, and would therefore be likely to be a clue to the attachment process.
