“J'accuse” C.G. Jung's fascination from 1933 to 1936
Between 1934 and 1938, in interviews with Radio-Berlin and the English press, Jung discussed the issue of National Socialism. He applied a psychoanalytical interest to this sociopolitical phenomenon as the social expression of a shadow archetype. His fascination caused him to make certain blunders, such as excusing the Chief, criticizing the system of representative democracy, and, worse yet, making certain pronouncements which were unfortunate in such a tragic context. The unconsciousness of his opinions, is, to some, reminiscent of a certain sympathy. Beginning in 1936, Jung again became aware of reality, and denounced Hitler and National Socialism. According to his secretary in his last years, he escaped from fascination. The end of his period of ambiguity is moreover confirmed by the fact that his works appeared on the “Otto List” of books banned by the Nazis.
