A female character in a film may represent either an actual woman or the anima. The anima archetype can be recognized by certain characteristics. Problems of the anima in relation to other archetypes, such as her dependency on the persona, her vulnerability to the senex, and her ambivalent relationship to the mother, are revealed through a study of Cukor’s A Star is born, Hitchcock’s Vertigo, and Bogdanovich’s Mask.
