The Other of the Double

By Aimé Agnel
English

According to the Jungian conception, the double is a figure of the other, which refers to the shadow (dark double) or to the self (inner friend). For Pierre Solié, the double is an archetype that Jung may have « forgotten », and the subject must learn to differentiate it in the same terms as he does the Complementary (animus or anima). Solié’s analysis of the Osiris-Isis and Demeter-Koré myths makes it possible to trace the psycho-spiritual evolution of this archetype from the narcissistic Double (imaginary) to the individuated one (imaginal). Closely correlated with the Complementary, the Double is defined by Pierre Solié as the « fertilizing principle » of man (Logos spermaticos) and of woman (Logos hystericos).
