It was while Jung was a university student in Basel (1895-1900) that some of his intuitions about the unconscious and the psyche came to light. Based on both published and unpublished documents from that time, the author presents the assumption that these intuitions were inspired by Basel’s humanist tradition, emphasizing the historical and cultural influences. These elements played a significant role in Jung’s relations with Freud and their later rift, although they were not the only points of contention.
