Did Individuation Exist Before Jung?
By Michel Cazenave
English
Jung himself said that although he had articulated his theory of the individuation process within the framework of modern psychology, it was a form of wisdom which had always existed. A study of the deeper meaning and the circumstances of this process reveals similarities with certain ancient individuation practices like shamanistic initiation, the initiation to the mysteries, and ancient philosophy understood as a balm for the wounded soul. However, all of the foregoing processes are based on an unknowable finality which Jung also recognized, dubbing it the unconscious, while guarding analysis from the sometimes fatal recklessness inherent to the traditional processes.
