This article explores the evolution and articulations of the concept of the foreigner as expressed by certain European social practices, which share a common reference to the idea of madman. These variations are then compared and contrasted to the projective and symbolic statutes of the professional private analyst and the developmental paths appearing as the 21st century dawns. Lastly, the article examines why Jung resorted to words which were foreign to his customary parlance to forge some of his major concepts.
