Psychological types in transference, countertransference and therapeutic interaction

By John Beebe, Laurence Lacour

Based on a joint reading of Jung’s book Psychological Types (1921), the authors express their personal reactions and understanding, centering their discussion on the theme of attitudes : introversion and extroversion. In their eyes, one of the main goals of this text is to establish the existence of the collective unconscious. The authors discuss the importance of objects from the outer world, in particular man’s physical body, as well as the work the subject must accomplish in order to move from an attitude which confines him to introversion, understood as a process enabling change.
