A look at Aboriginal civilization

By Betty Villeminot

This article contrasts two human evolutionary phenomena, our own and that of the Aborigenes. It begins with a brief survey of the pre-colonial civilization of the first inhabitants of Australia, their social organization, beliefs, aspirations and accomplishments. The author emphasizes the importance of oneiric activity in this society, and introduces us to the Dream Master, a shaman who, having undergone a perilous apprenticeship and long spiritual quest, acquires amazing paranormal faculties, the product of a civilization which is highly civilized in its own way. This is a glimpse of the evolution of humans who have remained nomadic, by contrast to our evolution as sedentary peoples.
