Jung and Bion listening to psychic reality
The author joins the discussion about possible theoretical convergence between C. G. Jung and W. R. Bion, a subject that is currently arousing increasing interest in the United Kingdom, California, and Italy, among analysts from both the Freudian and the Jungian models. The theme chosen to investigate these convergences is psychic reality, the concept on which Freud developed psychoanalysis, as well as being one both Jung and Bion emphasized in their writings. The author goes on to consider whether the “transformation in ‘O’” described by Bion and the individuation process described by Jung may be linked. Lastly, the relationship between psychic and material realities is examined, taking into account the modifications in the very concept of matter that have resulted from revolutionary developments in 20th century physics.
