Repression of the Female and the Medusa Tragedy

This essay reveals the patriarchal bias of Greek myths, and the male domination and violence they express towards women. The author analyzes the myth of Medusa as an instance of rape and femicide that protects the man who commits the crimes. The fact that the myth has survived for centuries and is still part of our world today shows that the tragedy and violence towards women it contains are still a threat, especially when women display their worth and abilities. But Medusa left an inheritance: her children represent the strength and sublimation that emanate from her blood, both as a means of overcoming the trauma and in terms of the need to integrate these qualities into the individuation process.
